Mountain biking in Crete offers exceptional terrain — but also serious risks. These routes are not beginner-friendly and should only be undertaken by experienced, confident riders.
Terrain Conditions
- Steep gradients (up to 30%).
- Loose gravel, exposed switchbacks, rocky descents.
- Remote locations with poor or no phone coverage.
- Variable track conditions: erosion, livestock, and seasonal hazards.
Seasonal Hazards
- Summer: Extreme heat and dehydration risk.
- Spring: Flooding, wasp nests, overgrown trails.
- Autumn: Loose surfaces, hunting activity.
- Winter: River crossings, washed-out tracks, mud.
Minimum Equipment
- E-MTB with working brakes, good tyres, and full battery.
- Helmet (mandatory).
- Water (2–3 litres minimum).
- Tubeless repair kit or spare tubes.
- Multitool, pump, chain tool.
- First aid kit.
- Power bank for mobile phone and GPS.
- GPS navigation device (Garmin, Hammerhead, etc.).
- Use downloaded GPX or FIT files + carry paper map backup.
- Leave route card / map / ETA with hotel or family.
Rider Expectations
- You must be able to ride steep, loose, and technical terrain.
- You must be prepared to turn back, reroute, or abort safely.
- Hike-a-bike sections may be unavoidable.
- Ride in groups where possible.
- Your safety is your responsibility.
