Out on the road near one of the smaller villages, I passed this bank of bright blue communal letterboxes \u2014 a fixture in rural Crete that many riders barely notice.<\/p>\n<p>In places where homes are spread across hillsides and olive groves, door-to-door post doesn\u2019t work; instead, villagers use a shared drop-point like this. Each box is numbered, locked, and painted in Hellenic blue. These shrines mark loss, give thanks for a life spared, or stand as a quiet act of devotion.<\/p>\n<p>Weathered but upright, its cross intact, the small window rusted from decades of sun and sea air. Set beneath a eucalyptus tree and framed by dry-stone walls. It features a striking red Byzantine cross with the inscription <strong>IC XC NIKA<\/strong> \u2014 the Orthodox declaration <em>\u201c\u0399\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2 \u039d\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u201d<\/em> (Jesus Christ Conquers).<\/p>\n<p>The upper inscription reads <em>\u03a4\u039f \u0391\u0393\u0393\u0395\u039b\u0399\u039a\u039f \u03a3\u03a7\u0397\u039c\u0391<\/em> (The Angelic Schema), signifying the highest monastic rank, while a white banner below carries the phrase <em>\u039f\u0394\u039f\u039d \u039e\u0395\u03a3\u03a3\u0395<\/em> \u2014 archaic for \u201cSeek the path\u201d or \u201cFind the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the base, a skull and crossbones serve as a solemn <em>memento mori<\/em> \u2014 a reminder of mortality and the hope for resurrection, echoing the Orthodox tradition of depicting Adam\u2019s skull at Golgotha.<\/p>\n<p>The design intentionally pairs the proclamation of Christ\u2019s conquest over death with a call to repentance and monastic vigilance. One belonged to a farmer or a baker; the other, to a rider chasing stories through olive trails and forest turns.<\/p>\n<p>One bore bread, oil, letters, or flowers. The pines on the left throw cool shade across the path, while on the right, the scrub opens to reveal the wide Apokoronas plain.<\/p>\n<p>In the distance, the White Mountains rise \u2014 the Lefka Ori \u2014 their pale limestone ridges holding the last light of morning. They look close enough to touch, yet every rider here knows that their slopes hide a labyrinth of trails, gorges, and history.<\/p>\n<p>This is old ground. Shepherds once moved their flocks along this very path. During the war, resistance couriers \u2014 men like George Psychoundakis, the Cretan Runner \u2014 would have used it to vanish from sight within minutes, slipping into the folds of the land.<\/p>\n<p>Today, it\u2019s quiet. Just the crunch of tyres on stone, the smell of pine resin, and the steady pull towards the peaks. The mountains are calling \u2014 and the ride is just beginning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Legend:<\/strong> Deep within the White Mountains, near the high plain of Omalos, lies the cave where Zeus was hidden as an infant, saved from his father Cronus, who devoured his children. The Kouretes, armed dancers, clashed their shields to mask his cries, ensuring the future king of the gods survived.
